Friday Signal: Giddy for Google and Twitter?

It’s Fall, so M&A is in the air, and what could be bigger than Google buying Twitter? Nothing. Because it ain’t happening. To the links:

Stop It. Google Won’t Buy Twitter. (Searchblog) In which I opine on why.

Facebook is Now the Second Largest Video Site in the U.S. (RWW) Why does this matter? Because Google covets video.

Exclusive: Major Meltdown at Yahoo as More Top Execs to Depart, Including U.S. Head Hilary Schneider (ATD) Honestly, I’m not that surprised by this move. Hilary Schneider’s tenure always seemed at risk in a Bartz regime.

Study: select Android apps sharing data without user notification (engadget) Come on guys, let’s not poop where we eat. Sharing data is crucial to the open web, but getting permission is fundamental (as is creating value).

Strata Week: Behind LinkedIn Signal (ORR) I like the ideas behind LinkedIn Signal. But I’m considering a lawsuit over the name….Yeah I’m after you, Weiner…

What Will The Internet Look Like In 10 Years? (Internet Society) Well, I have to say, this piece is not very approachable. I started watching the first video and was singularly underwhelmed. Am I wrong? I mean, who wants to say bad things about The Internet Society?

FM’s program of the day is the American Expresss OPEN Forum conversation with the White House on taxes and small business.

Thursday Signal: It’s Not Personal Till It Is

A theme of the day: Personalization. Facebook says it’ll be so. I agree, to a point. Personalization is great, but it’s useless without social context. Getting the blend right is art, not science. Forgive the short links, but I’m traveling and on the run…To the links:

Facebook’s Sandberg: In The Future, All Media Will Be Personalized (paidContent) Well, at this point, all media is already personal. So I guess we just need the “ized…”

Tweet This Milestone: Twitter Passes MySpace (WSJ) No no no. Myspace passes Twitter…on the way down!

What Does a Sold Out iPhone 4 Say About China? (GigaOm) Apple has sold nearly 100,000 iPhone 4 handsets through China Unicom in the first four days of device sales, while 200,000 total phones were pre-ordered.
What Twitter Learns from All Those Tweets (TR) It learns what people are interested in. Now that’s pretty powerful stuff. It’s the Database of Intentions….
Q&A with Steve Ballmer on mobile, search and Facebook (Seattle Times) Always love to hear him opine.
FM’s program of the day is the Dove Movement for Self Esteem, which FM is powering through various program executions across our audience of more than 15mm influential women.

Weds. Signal: The Future of Ads, Revealed!

With nothing but time stretching ahead of us, thank goodness that the world of interactive marketing has figured out the future of display advertising. To the links:

Time Likely To End Within Earth’s Lifespan, Say Physicists (TR) Well, there you have it. Just in time for the holidays, a 3.7 billion year reprieve.

What does the future of display advertising look like? (Google) Google attempts to answer that question. Oddly, Google has all the answers! Amazing. But it’s a good post, nonetheless.

AOL’s Project Devil Aims To Update The Banner Once And For All (PC) Not a new idea, but well marketed. Also see Cheerios, Lexus Among First Brands to Use AOL’s Bigger Ads (ClickZ)

Medialets Making Mobile Display Interesting At Scale Says CEO Litman (AdExchanger) An interview with a mobile ad network innovator.

RIM Launches Mobile Ad Service for BlackBerry Developers (ClickZ) For now, an aggregation of ad networks. I am sure they have more planned.

Most Teen Brand Word-of-Mouth Occurs Offline (MarketingProfs) I am not sure, from personal experience with my son, that this is going to hold.

Foursquare Marketing Hits and Misses: 5 Case Studies (ClickZ) Interesting case studies.

It’s Official: AOL Acquires TechCrunch (SAI) And the content world shivers in anticipation of more.

Green Dot: The $2 Billion IPO You’ve Never Heard Of (TC) I had no idea. Very interesting company.

Tuesday Signal: The New Yorker – GASP! – Doesn’t Like Social Media

Well, it had to happen, Twitter and Facebook have reached the point of ticking off the author of the Tipping Point. As my son would say: Bitter much? To the links:

Malcolm Gladwell Doesn’t Care if You Retweet This [MediaMemo] (ATD) Well, there goes one more really smart person over to the “media elite” who are “out of touch with the common folk.” Grin. My favorite quote from his piece? “Innovators tend to be solipsists. They often want to cram every stray fact and experience into their new model.” I might rewrite that, just for giggles, to “Threatened elitist writers tend to be solipsists. They often want to cram every stray fact and experience into their old model.” This is a weak essay, and it’s maddening that it’s getting so much attention. And there I go, giving it more…

WordPress.com and Windows Live partnering together and providing an upgrade for 30 million Windows Live Spaces customers (Windows Blog) Great news for WordPress, impressive. See also MSN Spaces Closing, Becomes WP.com (Ma.tt)

Blog: Can RIM Satisfy Both Consumers and the Enterprise with Its Tablet? (eMarketer) The “PlayBook” is an impressive tablet, from what I read about it. Look forward to seeing it live.

A Badge That Tells Consumers, ‘Trust This App’ (NYT) No, it’s not a Foursquare badge, it’s a “Good Housekeeping” seal for mobile apps. Man, did Good Housekeeping miss the bus or what?

Can anybody beat the iPad? (Fortune) Apparently, not, according to this one-source piece with no reporting to speak of. Take it for what it’s worth.

To Advertisers, Twitter’s a Fledgling (WSJ) and Exclusive: Want Twitter to Help You Find More Followers? Pay Up For a “Promoted Account.” (ATD) Oddly, the WSJ piece has no reporting actually backing up the lead graf, which claims advertisers have mixed responses.

FM’s program of the day is the “Your Naked Truth” “rant” banners and Facebook app, on behalf of Naked Juice. Cool!

Welcome, Jesse!

Please welcome our newest FM employee,  Jesse Jacobs! He joins our Engineering Team as a Systems Administrator in our Canadian Office.

Jesse is kind of a science nut with a number of years in geophysics as a developer/field technician. He comes to us  from Tucows, a registrar where he ensured  service availability and wrote Python/Perl Nagios monitoring and SLA tests.  While at Tucows, Jesses also tinkered with a irc bot to automate most functions (also homegrown and written in Python).

In his free time, Jesse enjoys video games (flight sims, RPGs and a bunch of Wii games – the remote totally rocks) , snowbording and cycling. He also enjoys cooking and eating, but mostly eating :) . Welcome to FM, Jesse!

Monday Signal: This Is Only An Eye Test

Happy Monday, now get back to work! This monday brings a mish mash of news, including a new graphic to confuse (or inspire) you. Read on for the weekend’s links:

New Ad Tech Ecosystem Map Released By LUMA Partners’ Kawaja (AdExchanger) Terry does it again. Pour yourself a stiff one and stare at this for a while. Then wonder to yourself…how did I get here?

Blog: Twitter’s New Advertising Opportunities (eMarketer) I’ve been saying this for months….

Caught on Video: Chuck Norris Solves iPhone 4 Signal Issues (IntoMobile) Because we need to laugh on Monday.

Developers see Google’s Android operating system surpassing Apple’s (SJ Merc) And Signal readers are not surprised.

Getting Your Money’s Worth At The Movies (AVC) Fred has more to say (and action you can take) about “Waiting for Superman.” If you want to see the director, come to Web 2. This is an important film.

Study Finds That Apple Dominates Tech News (Media Decoder) Dog Bites Man!!!!

What Will Future Generations Condemn? (WaPo) For whatever reason, most likely the growing up of my kids, I find myself thinking about this a lot. Not usual Signal stuff, but every so often we need to step back and ask “what are we building here, and why, after all?”

Welcome, Dara!

Please join me in welcoming Dara Pollak to the FM family as the newest account coordinator on the East Alpha team in New York. Dara comes to us from US Weekly where she was an Advertising Sales Assistant.

Dara is a lifelong New Yorker who is classically trained in ballet, tap and jazz. She also spent some time interning for Howard Stern while she was in college, which we’re eager to hear all about.

Welcome, Luke!

It is my pleasure to introduce Luke Laydon who will be leading the charge for FM in LA as our new Regional Sales Manager. A few fun facts about Luke: He’s a Colorado native, grew up outside of Boulder but decided to go to CSU instead (Go RAMS!) Sidenote: CSU is known for their great farming program. Right Jen T?

Luke is an Uncle to awesome nephew and niece, a sports and outdoors fan, very average surfer, he digs intelligent hip-hop and most music (save country and death metal), and yes… a co-chihuahua owner.  Better yet her name is Nadia. (Luke claims his wife forced this dog purchase but I think we know better). Welcome to FM, Luke!
