Tuesday Signal: Control, Alter, Delete

When the market fails, sometimes government steps in. That seems to be the case when it comes to choice and Apple these past 24 hours, we’ll see if it sticks.Facebook has the same issue, to my mind. And the links roll on….

Jailbreaking Your iPhone Is Now Legal (Cult of Mac) Apple didn’t say it was OK, the Gov’mint did. So how do you feel about that, Steve? I’m guessing you are PISSED.

Facebook reportedly adds “Delete Account” option. (TNW) It’s about time, if this is true, and if they don’t something tells me the gov’mint might have something to say about this in due time. True instrumentation requires ease of use and that means the ability to just say no. And then, of course change your mind and say “Wait, no, I want it back!” Which if course will happen.

Where in the World is Facebook Used? (RWW) An interactive map. Maybe they’ll addd “where Facebook is deleted”….

Google May Not Have Bought Yelp, But They Sure Are Trying To Own Them With Places (TC) Google is going in too many directions, and not winning in most. I am not sure about this. I plan to investigate further…

Advertising is next (BI) Author Jarvis argues advertising is dead. He’s so wrong it’s barely worth responding. But he’s very, very wrong on many measures. (He may not be wrong about Conde Nast, but that’s another story).

The Power of Positive Failure (HBR) I coulda told ya that.

New Buzzlogic Units Let Advertisers Match Consumers With Content (ClickZ) Good idea. So good we’ve been doing it for years at FM. But this seems more automated (we’ve been doing that for less than years, more than months). Good on em. I need to write more press releases, apparently.

Don’t Blame the Content Farms (MediaShift) Amem and pass the blame somewhere else. Oh wait, perhaps that’s a mirror you need?

Today’s FM’s campaign of the day is Yahoo’s Flickr blog integration. It’s super cool.

If it suits your information consumption goals, sign up for Signal’s email newsletter on the Signal home page (upper right box). You’ll get an exclusive, email only weekly roundup of Signals.

  1. Jan Simmonds says:

John, I commented on Jeff’s Conde Nast piece and politely disagreed with his point of view suggesting that we are currently drowning in a sea of user-generated graffiti and mediocrity and that the likes of Conde Nast are what is needed to ensure some class remains in journalism and static content and that they still have long established relationships with the likes of WPP et al which the new pretenders can only dream of. I also similarly suggested that the advertisers are not only all still there, they just haven’t found anyone who has an elegant enough home for them to frequent… yet! Jeff Jarvis seemingly didn’t like the points I made and removed my post… Is he just sensitive or prefers to maintain his cache by selective editing of his online challengers?

  2. Not sure Jan. Doesn’t sound like Jeff to not let full debate occur!
