Friday Signal: Vacation Ahoy!

A light Signal, as I am easing into vacation mode. There’ll be more for those of you who are email readers in the Weekend Edition. To the links:

Google: The search party is over (Fortune) One could have said that about Microsoft and Windows ten years ago. Anyone see their profits recently?

The Web’s New Gold Mine: Your Secrets (WSJ) Just came in, have not read it yet. But I’d watch this space. To call it “new” is pretty lame though.

Microsoft: We are focusing on eight core businesses (All About Microsoft) Just eight? Come on folks, go for ten! Then again, Google might learn something here.

Angel investor Ron Conway: Every entrepreneur should get funded (VentureBeat) I love Ron but – everyone?!

DST: A Mutual Fund of Hot Startups, With a Russian Accent (GigaOm) CEO Yuri Milner is speaking at Web 2 this year.

Marketers Ponder the Worth of Twitter’s Ads (ClickZ) I’ve seen behind the curtain. There is a real there there.

Today’s FM’s campaign of the day is the Verizon / TechDirt Webinar.

Thursday Signal: Life Is a Grand Game, So Check In, Brother

A shorter Signal for Thursday, as I’m traveling again, and it’s not easy to write this from a hotel room in Mexico City. For your consumption pleasure, these curated links:
Brands on Sidelines as Disney, Google and MTV Charge Into Social Games (AdAge) This is going to be an interesting year for social and casual gaming. I think the whole world will be game-ified.

Facebook, Twitter Influence Purchases (Information Week) And a dog bit a man. But it’s good to have proof points.

Google Develops a Facebook Rival (WSJ) And Facebook is getting into search, folks!!

LinkedIn: Now Worth More Than $2 Billion (Mashable) Good for Reid, Jeff, and all the folks there.

‘Check-in’ craze moves beyond location (The Social) But you knew that, because you read Signal! And Searchblog!

Publishers And The Hidden Costs Of Data Leakage (AdExchanger) Lord, I hope those leaks won’t stain my carpet.

Searching for Answers? Ask Facebook Questions (Facebook Blog) Is Facebook getting featuritis? Or, perhaps, is it also leaking?!

Apple Opens iAd Network to Developers (The Loop) It’s not what it sounds like. They’re letting developers buy iAds, not develop on top of it.

Today’s FM’s campaign of the day is a joint RRW/VMWare/Intel whitepaper on the future of cloud computing (it’s free thanks to Intel and VMware).

Weds Signal: Get Out There And Be Counted!

The past 24 hours of links remind me how important it is to get out there, to be in the world. As a person, as a brand, as a media company. To that end, I’ll be traveling the rest of the week, and Signal might be, well, weak. Next week, I am on vacation. But I may well Signal it anyway, because I love to cull the herd of links this industry keeps driving down the range. To those links…

ComScore Flunks Math. Yahoo Not Amused. (ATD) When Yahoo has an issue, it issues a press release and Comscore apologizes. The rest of us? Well, not so much.

How to Socialize User Experience Design: Thinking Outside Your Website (Shannon Paul) That’s right Shannon. It’s not about the website, it’s about the conversation. The website, for lack of a better analogy, is YOU now. Where you = the brand. And you should hang out in more places than your living room. IE, get out there. But have a party every so often at your house, natch.

iPad Owners Are ‘Selfish Elites.’ Critics Are ‘Independent Geeks.’ Discuss. (Wired) As I said, a million times (OK about twice): It’s the Mac of the tablet world. I owned a Mac. I don’t think I’ll own an iPad. If, and it’s a big if, Android doesn’t make aWindows hash of it.

Hey Old Spice haters, sales are up 107% (AdFreak) Well what do you know? Brands matter.

What Marketers Can Learn From Starbucks’ Foursquare Stumble (adAge) Er…one guy goes into one store, where one manager failed to tell his staff about a promotion, and that means it’s a failure as a campaign? Come on guys. Let’s be real here.

Mashable Celebrates Its 5th Birthday (Mashable) Congratulations, Mashable, a partner we’re proud to say we’ve been with nearly as long.

Facebook launches a “Facebook + Media” page (Neiman Journalism Lab) Waking giant realizes publishers matter. Good.

Forrester: Why Most Marketers Should Forgo Foursquare (AdAge) Too small, they say. Well, Twitter was too small back in late 08, when we started recommending our clients should work with it. Same for Facebook in 07. And Digg in 06. And blogs in 05. See a pattern yet?!

Ask Comes Full Circle With “Q&A” Offering (SEL) I wish you luck, Ask, in a space rife with waning competitors.

Disney Buys Playdom For Up To $763.2 Million (paidcontent) Another key point of control, and one of the many we’ll be talking about at Web 2 this year.

Today’s FM’s campaign of the day is the Boing Boing Submitterator, a dream long held and now realized, thanks to underwriting by American Express Zync. True community value add. Very proud to be part of it.

Tuesday Signal: Control, Alter, Delete

When the market fails, sometimes government steps in. That seems to be the case when it comes to choice and Apple these past 24 hours, we’ll see if it sticks.Facebook has the same issue, to my mind. And the links roll on….

Jailbreaking Your iPhone Is Now Legal (Cult of Mac) Apple didn’t say it was OK, the Gov’mint did. So how do you feel about that, Steve? I’m guessing you are PISSED.

Facebook reportedly adds “Delete Account” option. (TNW) It’s about time, if this is true, and if they don’t something tells me the gov’mint might have something to say about this in due time. True instrumentation requires ease of use and that means the ability to just say no. And then, of course change your mind and say “Wait, no, I want it back!” Which if course will happen.

Where in the World is Facebook Used? (RWW) An interactive map. Maybe they’ll addd “where Facebook is deleted”….

Google May Not Have Bought Yelp, But They Sure Are Trying To Own Them With Places (TC) Google is going in too many directions, and not winning in most. I am not sure about this. I plan to investigate further…

Advertising is next (BI) Author Jarvis argues advertising is dead. He’s so wrong it’s barely worth responding. But he’s very, very wrong on many measures. (He may not be wrong about Conde Nast, but that’s another story).

The Power of Positive Failure (HBR) I coulda told ya that.

New Buzzlogic Units Let Advertisers Match Consumers With Content (ClickZ) Good idea. So good we’ve been doing it for years at FM. But this seems more automated (we’ve been doing that for less than years, more than months). Good on em. I need to write more press releases, apparently.

Don’t Blame the Content Farms (MediaShift) Amem and pass the blame somewhere else. Oh wait, perhaps that’s a mirror you need?

Today’s FM’s campaign of the day is Yahoo’s Flickr blog integration. It’s super cool.

Monday Signal: Summertime, and The Linkin’ Is Easy…

Happy Monday. I’ve culled 500 or so stories, and found just a handful worth your time. It was an odd weekend, perhaps as we all look toward a few weeks in Summer where we might – perhaps – stop obsessing about our industry for a bit. Then again…

11 Mind-Blowing Mobile Marketing Infographics (Hubspot) Look at all this. Really, look at it. It’s worth it.

The Top Idea In Your Mind (Paul Graham) “I suspect a lot of people aren’t sure what’s the top idea in their mind at any given time. I’m often mistaken about it. I tend to think it’s the idea I’d want to be the top one, rather than the one that is. But it’s easy to figure this out: just take a shower. What topic do your thoughts keep returning to? If it’s not what you want to be thinking about, you may want to change something.” OK then. I think.

Article: Web Users Demand Control over Ad Targeting (eMarketer) Er, sort of. Give me control when I know I want it. Or, in other words, read my mind. But don’t get creepy while you do it, OK?

The 10 commandments of content marketing (imedia) Yes. All Marketing Is Content. Where have I heard that before?!

WikiLeaks Releases Afghan War Reports in Unprecedented Leak (Mashable) And this after most thought the service had died. I for one wish this service health. We need it. See aksi WikiLeaks May Have Just Changed the Media, Too (The Atlantic)

Will Zynga Become the Google of Games? (NYT) I am fond of this company and its story, including the messy bits. Marc Pincus will be at Web 2 Summit this year.

Friday Signal: Is Apple Evil? Is the Web Over? Is Privacy Dead? Is This Thing On?!

Friday is a day to reflect on the week that was. Or the five years that have been, in Zuckerberg’s case. Lots of Deep Questions in today’s roundup… To the links:

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Talks to Diane Sawyer as Website Gets 500-Millionth Member (ABC) Despite the TV lights, Zuck stays cool. I was asked to comment on this for the set up piece, but I’ve found network news to be, well time consuming and rarely worth the time.

Less Than 1 Year Until The Internet Runs Out of Addresses (RWW) Good Lord, we’ll have to make up some new numbers, quick.

It’s Time For Web Publishers To Start Thinking About Bing SEO (Business Insider) Indeed it is.

Microsoft Reports Record Fourth-Quarter Results (MSFT) Office and Windows kills it. Those are legacy businesses but the make a lot of money. So does Xbox. But online? Still losing hundreds of millions.

Fred Wilson: Apple Is ‘Evil,’ Facebook Is Just A ‘Photo-Sharing Site’ (HuffPo) I love interviewing Fred on stage.

38 states press Google on personal data (CNN) This one isn’t going away, though I doubt in the end much will come of it other than some clarity.

IAB Tells Congress Privacy Bills May Harm Business and Consumers (IAB) I am on the Board of the IAB. That does not mean it always speaks for me.  I have not read the text of these bills. I should.

Yes, In-Text Ads Can Work (MediaPost) Apparently they can. I’m still not a fan but as I’ve written in the past, we can and should learn from what works.

Today’s FM’s campaign of the day is the HP Input Output interview with founder of 37 Signals Jason Fried, which aired yesterday live. I did this earlier this year and it was a lot of fun.

Thursday Signal: Why I Love My Job, Again.

I love this industry. I love what it can do, what it is doing, what it might do, and what it has already done. Today’s news just reminded me of that. To the links:

Meet Flipboard: Mike McCue Talks About Stealth “Social Magazine” (ATD) I saw this a few months ago. I kept quiet. I love this idea. I want it to work in a big way.

Stick it to the Man and email while driving with Text’nDrive. (TNW) Jesus. I have to start taking a nickel for every idea I rant about over more than 6000 posts on Searchblog. IE, Texting Is Stupid. What I love is that App World had supplanted Carrier World. And all in two years. I F*cking LOVE the Interwebs. And yes, thanks Steve Jobs. Now get out of our way.

Old Spice Guy. Brilliant. But not Social. (Mele’s Musings) Interesting observation – very good, but not very “real.” Very calculated. Not that it’s not a good idea to be so.

The Web Means the End of Forgetting (NYT) No shite, folks. Then again, worth noting.

500 Million Stories (Facebook Blog) Well, there you have it. Milestone reached. I have to say, it’s just wonderful to watch this unfold. And yet, the company most likely has yet to be launched that will supplant Facebook. And it will. This is why I love this industry, and the humanity, all half a billion of us, that embrace it.

Business problems need business solutions (Google Blog) Yes, we can save journalism. Er….wait, who’s we again?

How Coca-Cola Created Its “Happiness Machine” (Mashable) Just a good read about a campaign that seems to be a win all around.

What Marketers Can Learn From The Google-MySpace Ad Deal Failure (AdExchanger) Well, it all seems pretty obvious now, don’t it? But let’s not forget, alot of this had to do with search distribution, not marketing, back in 2006.

Go With What You Know: Google Ventures Invests in Search Marketing Start-up Trada ( ATD) Google invests in what Google knows best.

What Means This, To “Go Google”!? (Searchblog) Yes, it’s me again. Popping off.

Online Ad Spend Resumes Rapid Growth (AdWeek) OK, who doesn’t love a headline like that?

Today’s FM’s campaign of the day is GE Ecoimagination, which we are supporting through a partnership with TweetMeme. GE and partners are awarding $200,000,000 to ideas that advance the Smart Grid. Submit your idea. Get it funded. Watch it change the world. Are you guys starting to notice that FM and its partners are involved in some pretty cool stuff? I sure am.

Weds. Signal: The Numbers Tell The Story

Welcome to the middle of the week, Signal fans, and numbers are in the air. Earnings season is in full throat, Apple crushed it, Yahoo not so much. Facebook has some brand image work to do, the numbers say, and from what I can tell, we’re all a fickle bunch when it comes to what we like and what we don’t. To the links….

What Surprising Number Will Change Your Business? (HBR) Numbers are utterly useless, until they tell you a story. Then they are magic. But let’s not lose sight of the story, shall we?

Study: “Facebook Flops, Google Drops” In New Consumer Satisfaction Ratings (SEL) I like it when SEL debunks numbers, and tells the real story (speaking of numbers and stories). It’s sure not good to have negative sentiment around a brand, but it’s not as bad as it seems.

Why Media Agencies Don’t Need Separate Units For Social Media (Ad Age) Interesting insights from an in the trenches guy on the agency side. Clearly too young to worry about burning bridges. Or too smart to care. “In order to generate the buzz and really tap that word-of-mouth potential, the best investment a brand can make is time.”

Apple Crushes It, Sells 3.27 Million iPads In June Quarter (SAI) Not a surprise. Good for Apple.

TechCrunch Review: The Blekko Search Engine Prepares To Launch (TC) I met with the founders of Blekko today. More on that later in the week. I think this could be important.

Yahoo Surprises Slightly in 2Q Earnings, But Not on Revenues (ATD) 19% y/y growth in display is good, but I know of at least one company doing, oh, about 8-9 times that. Of course, it’s working off a smaller base, for now.

With New Report FCC Makes a Bid for Universal Broadband (GigaOm) Wrangling continues as gov’t and industry argue past each other.

The Funniest Marketing Fails Of All Time (PHOTOS) (Huffpo) Just for fun.

Today’s FM’s campaign of the day is Open Forum from American Express Open. Because I just dig the work everyone is doing there.
