Weds. Signal: It’s a Good Day to Read The News

Sometimes our industry gets so dern interesting, it’s just a pleasure to riffle through the headlines. Today was such a day. Good writing, interesting issues, and a slight touch of the optimistic, even on a day when the markets thought the world had ended. This is why I love our industry. To the links:

The Death of Touch and the Lost Joy of the Unexpected (HuffPo/Ruxin) A pal pens a tribute to the physical. This feels like the first movement in a symphony. It’s not over yet.

We’re just getting started… (Foursquare Blog) Mark this day. The day Foursquare announced it plans to move to the next level on its own. An important moment in any company’s lifecycle. Congratulations. Now get to work.

Monday Signal: Welcome to Summer, Now Get to Work

Do things slow down as summer waxes? Not really. But we’ve sifted through hundreds of stories, just to bring you these:

Facebook and Twitter users spend 1.5x more online than the average Internet user (Solis) Good news for those of us who think this stuff is important.

Google’s mismanagement of the Android Market (nanocr.eu) I need to get an Android phone to truly appreciate this, but all I hear is how bad the app store is for Android. It needs FOCUS.

Friday Signal: We Scream for iPhone, But the News Is Facebook’s Push Into Search

If any Signal readers spent the better part of yesterday waiting in line for an iPhone 4, well, here’s to you. Lots of news around that device today, but I’m not going to focus on that much of it, and no, I’m not even going to link to the stuff about how you’re supposed to hold the damn thing (so as to avoid dampening reception). To me, the big news is Facebook’s Open Graph search. To the highlights:

First day sales: 1.5 million iPhone 4s? (Fortune) But yet… 77% of sales were upgrades.

Apple iOS location data changes prompt government inquiry (IntoMobile) Well, more like a letter from some congressmen, but it’s still the gov’mint.

Verizon adds new Droid to line of iPhone rivals (CNNMoney) As reports of poor reception on the iPhone4 continue to stream in, Motorola’s CEO says, “The reason people carry devices with them is that they like to make and receive calls… We have the network to deliver the device.”

Bing & Yahoo Prompting iPhone Users To Switch Search Engines (Search Engine Land) Interesting that in the iWorld, this is darn easy. And I wonder why Google isn’t doing it too. Perhaps Apple made it easier for Google’s rivals to get folks to switch? Clearly that’d be in Apple’s interest. And another conspiracy theory begins….

GetJar, The ‘Wal-Mart For Mobile Apps,’ Raises $11 Million (MocoNews) Well, maybe WalMart is a stretch, but it’s good to see a non-Apple app store ecosystem get some love.

Microsoft: We’re Selling Seven Copies of Windows 7 a Second (AllThingsD) Making Windows 7 the fastest-selling operating system in history. Not really a surprise, given the nature of the computing world now (ubiquitous).

Facebook Unleashes Open Graph Search Engine, Declares War On Google (AllFacebook) This is a big, big, big deal. Read the piece, watch this space.

To Stem Privacy Abuses, Industry Groups Will Track Web Trackers (WSJ) Coverage of an IAB-led self regulatory movement. I’m part of this through participation on the IAB board and related sub-committees.

HP Goes NuTsie For Melodeo, Pays $30 Million For Music Streaming Service (TC) A showdown with Apple in the making, for sure.

Facebook blocks new Twitter feature (ZDNet) Facebook tells Twitter to get its own friends, thank you very little.

Google Grabs 72% of Search in May (MarketingProfs) Wow.

How to Survive a Product Recall (Inc.) While limiting the damage to your company and reputation.

Olay, Gap, Pepsi Run Geo-Social Campaigns – but Not on Foursquare (ClickZ) Foursquare is best known, but several location services have more users.

Coke sees ‘phenomenal’ result from Twitter ads (FT) Very interesting. Early days, but good to see strong early results.

Thursday Signal: Back Up, and Running

Well, that was a nice break, but news never sleeps. And I’ve found an awful lot of it lying around in my absence. To the links:

eBay Buys RedLaser From Boulder Startup Occipital (RWW) This is a sign of things to come in e-commerce – a closed loop of physical and virtual marketing/commerce.

Celebrating Android (Google Blog) Not to be outdone by all the iPhone 4 hype (good luck with that), Google announces some pretty amazing figures of its own – 160K activations of Android devices a day. And…

Google and Motorola Unveil the New Droid (Mashable) This is an epic battle. The iPhone got a pretty wet kiss from the WSJ this week, but regardless, this fight is on, and on for some time to come.

Being Present (AVC) Fred muses on some really important things, and reminds me to get back to yoga now that I’m back from Asia. Happy belated Fathers Day to all you dads out there.

A New Entertainment Experience for Bing (MSFT Search Blog)

The Click-Through That May Be Hurting Your Brand (Ad Age) Not all clicks are good.

Judge Tosses Out Viacom’s $1B Lawsuit vs. Google (Clickz) Big news for Google. Bad news for Viacom, which is appealing.

What Brand Fans Are Worth (eMarketer) 136 bucks, or thereabouts. Apparently.

Rotten Apple, or Just Sour Grapes? (NYT) Apple, meet Google’s past role as industry target.

Poll shows Americans trust Facebook and Twitter more than traditional media (EditorsWeblog) Well, yes. Humans trust humans first, then brands.

Why Minority Report Was Spot On (Guardian) If you haven’t seen the movie, rent it. Well worth it.

If it suits your information consumption goals, sign up for Signal’s email newsletter on the Signal home page (upper right box). You’ll get an exclusive, email only weekly roundup of Signals.
