Our Team

John Battelle

Founder/Chairman/CEO

John Battelle, 42, is an entrepreneur, journalist, professor and author who has founded or co-founded scores of online, conference, magazine and other media businesses.

Prior to founding Federated Media, Battelle co-founded and continues to serve as Executive Producer of the Web 2 Summit conference, as well as “band manager” with BoingBoing.net.

Previously, Battelle occupied the Bloomberg chair in Business Journalism for the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. He was founder, Chairman, and CEO of Standard Media International (SMI), publisher of The Industry Standard and TheStandard.com. Prior to that, he was a co-founding editor of Wired magazine and Wired Ventures.

Battelle recently wrote The Search: How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture (Penguin/Portfolio), an international bestseller published in more than 25 languages. He created Searchblog, a daily site which covers the intersection of media, technology and the Internet. He is an expert in the field of search and has appeared on many national and international news channels such as BBC World News, CNN, PBS, Discovery Channel, CNBC, etc.

Battelle was a founding Board member of the Online Publishers Association and sits on the board of the Interactive Advertising Bureau, as well as the Board of his children’s school.

Battelle was named a “Global Leader for Tomorrow” and “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He was a finalist in the “Entrepreneur of the Year” competition by Ernst & Young and has recently been named an “Innovator – One of Ten Best Marketers in the Business”, by Advertising Age and one of the “Most Important People on The Web” by PCWorld. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley.

Deanna Brown

President and COO

Deanna began her career in the mid-eighties as a founding member of a small LA advertising agency upon graduation from the University of Southern California. She has since then become a seasoned media executive and now has more than 20 years of experience ranging from entrepreneur to Fortune 500 executive.

She most recently was President at Scripps Networks Digital, where she led the charge on bringing Scripps more fully into the digital space. In 1995 she co-founded CondeNet, the digital division of publisher CondeNast.

She has also held VP and General Manager titles at Yahoo and AOL, and founded other successful media companies including Powerful Media/Inside.com (acquired by Primedia) and Gaming Industry News (acquired by Ziff Davis).

Pete Spande

SVP of Sales

Pete Spande is FM’s SVP of sales overseeing the sales organization. In 2007, Spande joined FM as the East Coast sales lead and has worked closely with large tech, consumer packaged goods, finance, and entertainment brands on more than 100 groundbreaking social media marketing executions. Prior to Federated Media he was vice president and publisher of CMP’s TechWeb Network where he oversaw sales, marketing, and product development for CMP Technology’s largest online properties including 65 bloggers and 45 technology blogs. Prior to CMP, Pete held a variety of posts at CNET Networks including general management responsibilities for TechRepublic, one of the largest communities of tech professionals on the Internet. Prior to CNET, he held sales jobs at IDG and Miller Freeman.

Keith Bencher

SVP, Strategy & Development

Prior to joining the FM team, Keith led strategy and development efforts for various divisions at CNET Networks (CNET). Most recently, Keith was responsible for all strategic partnerships, business development, corporate development, finance and planning for CNET’s Games, Entertainment & Lifestyle business unit. Prior to 2003, Keith managed corporate development for CNET’s International division, expanding CNET’s presence in Europe and Asia-Pacific. Keith joined CNET in 2000 through its acquisition of ZDNet. Prior to joining ZDNet, Keith was an Associate with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in its Technology Mergers & Acquisitions Group. He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Our Investors

Federated Media was founded in 2005 with a small group of angel and seed investors including Omidyar Network and the New York Times Company. FM then closed a Series A funding round in 2006 led by Panorama Capital, and in 2008 received a $50 million investment from Oak Investment Partners.
